4 Strategies to Help LPNs Stay Motivated to Finish a RN Program

Are you a LPN studying to become a RN? Are you having a difficult time staying motivated? Here are four strategies to help you stay on track to complete your program.

1. Ask yourself, “Why do I want to become a RN?

Your “want to” has to be big enough to overcome any obstacles that get in your way. I know LPNs who want to become RNs, but never do because they don’t have a reason to finish a RN program that’s larger than the effort it takes to go back to school. I know. I went back to school to get my masters’ degree when my oldest son was three, and my second child was six months old. I worked 20 hours a week and traveled to school two hours away at least three times a week. My motivation was high. I wanted a nursing job where I did not have to work holidays and weekends, and I wanted the flexibility to do whatever I wanted career wise.

Notice how one of my reasons was to avoid pain (not working weekends or holidays) and the other was pleasurable(flexibility and choice). Try to find reasons to avoid pain (making less money, fewer career choices) and move towards pleasure (how great you will feel when you accomplish your goal, more money and job opportunities.)

Make a “Reasons I Want to Be a RN” poster. Have fun making it. Use different colored markers. Paste on pictures. Write words or phrases that motivate you. Keep it where you can see it every day to remind yourself of why you are pursuing this goal.

2.Take some time off from school

If you just got out of LPN school, give yourself a few months off before starting your RN program. You might need some time to savor your accomplishment and adapt to being a LPN. As you grow in confidence as a LPN, this may motivate you even more to do the work it takes to become a RN.

Then map out your plan to complete your RN. Give yourself a reward after finishing each month or each course.

3. Learn from the RNs you work with

Establish a good working relationship with the RNs you work with. Learn everything you can from them. As you get to know them, ask about how they stayed motivated to become a RN. Spend as much time as you can with the RNs who are positive about their job and nursing. Look for a role model.

4. Take good care of yourself mentally and physically

Halfway through my RN program, I thought about quitting. Then I compared what I would have if I continued on for one more year, and what I would have if I didn’t. The decision to go on was easy. Doing it was not. I took one day at a time. I rewarded myself for doing the work by going on a special outing or buying myself a small trinket or ice cream cone. I sought support from friends, fellow students and family. The year went faster than I imagined

Going from being a LPN to a RN isn’t easy. It’s even harder, if you are working and going to school at the same time. Follow these four strategies to help you stay motivated to complete your RN program.

How Sodium Can Play a Factor In Hypertension

This causes your heart to have to work harder to pump the increased blood volume to all parts of the body. Blood pressure is elevated. When your heart has to work very hard for too long, your heart muscle becomes fatigued and weakens.

In addition, when the heart pumps hard, it exerts a powerful force on the walls of your arteries when blood circulates through your system. When blood flows through your arteries with too much force, the walls of your arteries become damaged. Rough spots develop on your arterial walls, which start to trap fat and calcium resulting in the build up of plaque.

Plaque both narrows and stiffens your blood vessels. This impedes smooth blood flow and the organs and body tissues may start to be deprived of life-giving oxygen and nutrients. Eventually, heart and kidney failure, coronary heart disease, stroke and eye damage will very likely kick in. Your cardiovascular system will also find that regulating blood pressure and body temperature becomes increasingly difficult.

This damage is not immediately apparent. It invades your body slowly over time, which is why hypertension is often called the “silent killer”. There are no symptoms, and you won’t feel anything till the damage is fairly extensive.

An adult needs only an average of about five grams of salt everyday for your body to function. Most people take in about 10 times that amount daily. Folks suffering from hypertension should lower their intake of salt to about 1500 milligrams a day.

Almost 80% of the average person’s daily salt intake comes from processed foods. Eliminating processed foods from your diet will instantly bring your salt intake close to the recommended level. Strip Method of Hair Transplant

Hair Transplant is a minor but refined surgery used to replace the lost hair on scalp, eyebrows, beard or on any other part of the body where the hair are permanently lost, in men and women. Since genetic hair loss or ‘Male Pattern Baldness’ – also known as “Alopecia Androgenetica” – pronounced as “Alo-pee-shia An-dro-gene-ti-ca” is the most common form of baldness in men, with no medical remedy to completely reverse it at a later stage – hair transplant stays the treatment of choice. In many cases, however, medical treatment with topical and oral medications can be implemented if the baldness is in its early stages. For example in a young boy in his 20′s with early genetic baldness and a very strong history of genetic baldness in parents, a medication known as finesteride can be an effective therapy. Also, another medication known as Minoxidil when used topically in a concentration of 2% -5% twice daily on the balding area of scalp can significantly reduce the hair loss. When none of these medications work and the patient is already having a significant hair loss in which the reversal is deemed to be impossible with medications alone, hair transplant is the best option.

Simply described, hair transplant is a surgery in which hair are taken out from the normal scalp on the back of the head – the area which never grows completely bald in most men as the hair in this particular area are resistant to the damaging effects of the testosterone hormone responsible for the genetic hair loss. This is known for quite some time after years of research that the hairs in this area stay healthy and do not fall even if they are transferred to another area of scalp which is susceptible to baldness in genetic hair loss. So the healthy non-falling hair do not care about their location and stay in place as their genetic material makes them resistant to hair fall. In hair transplant surgery, these resilient hairs are taken out and are planted in the bald or balding area on the front of the head (scalp) where genetic baldness typically damages hair.

The question arises as to how should the hair be take out from the back of the head called as ‘donor area’ as this area donates the hair to be transplant onto the bald area. One of the best known, evaluated and practiced methods of taking the hair out from donor area is called as “strip method”. In this method a strip of about 1-2 cm width and 20-25 cm length is incised and taken out from the donor area from the back of the head. Obviously the whole skin along with its hair is surgically incised taking care of the roots of the hair not to get damaged. Since the strip is taken out in a surgical suite with all the surgical facilities like surgical lighting, well positioned and visible surgical field with magnification glasses to help aid the surgeon to avoid trauma to the hair root (hair follicles in general), the likelihood of cutting across and destroying the hair follicles is extremely small. And this is the beauty and the major advantage of the strip method over any other technique like ‘follicular unit extraction’ (FUE).

In FUE method of taking the hair out from the donor area, a cookie-cutter looking circular knife known as a ‘punch’ with a diameter of 1mm or so is inserted around one hair or a group of hair known as ‘follicular unit’ – blindly, as the surgeon can not see the root of the hair while inserting this very tiny instrument into the scalp (skin of the head). The surgeon assumes the direction of the punch knife and the hair shaft is the same and the knife will not cut the hair across. But this is just the assumption as hair are very soft structures and are not always straight like an iron rod. Their roots may change direction slightly as they are buried in the skin and thus the chances of cutting them across while taking them out with a tiny knife is much greater. Fortunately, most of the hair can be taken out without damage using FUE technique but compared to the traditional more established and more practiced technique of strip method of donor harvesting where the damage to the hair is extremely low, FUE stays the second option on the list of most experienced hair transplant surgeons in most cases across the globe.

When to Undergo Tire Replacement

EHR Adoption and Usability – The Critical Five Elements Every Physician Should Consider

Earlier this month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported 100,000 physicians and hospitals had registered for the Medicare or Medicaid electronic health record (EHR) incentive program. This resulted in more than $850 million in EHR incentives being paid through September 30, 2011.

While these statistics may look impressive, consider the fact that there are approximately 500,000 total eligible providers and 5,100 hospitals throughout the United States. With such a low market penetration, the data suggests that the U.S. healthcare system still has a long way to go in achieving one hundred percent adoption of EHR technology.

Currently, there are several factors that negatively impact EHR adoption, but dissatisfaction with usability is surfacing with greater frequency. While effective implementation and training plans affect EHR adoption rates as well, poor usability negatively impacts practice productivity, user satisfaction, and error rates.

EHR usability is typically associated with user satisfaction, but usability is actually more aligned with physician and patient workflow integration. Physicians and practice administrators place a significant amount of attention on the number of keystrokes, clicks, and screens. But what many fail to consider in assessing usability is how and when patient data is presented, which ensures the EHR platform provides physicians with the right information at the right time.

So what determines if a particular EHR platform is useable?

Before answering this question, it is important to note and recognize that the perfect EHR platform does not exist in the marketplace. And instead of physicians seeking the perfect template allowing for every patient visit to be recorded, their time is better spent looking for the template that fits the majority patients they see. Suffice it to say there is no 100% solution.

However, here are five elements every physician and practice administrator should consider when evaluating EHR usability:

2. Degree of Difficulty: To insure the EHR platform won’t require substantial changes to existing practice workflows and processes, physicians should pay particular attention to how they interact with nurses and staff when using the EHR in a demo environment. This goes for encounters with patients in the office, on the telephone, and with how incoming documentation is handled. A good best practice is for the physician and their team to visit a practice and see the EHR solution in full operation. This experience will clarify changes the physician and their staff should consider for their own unique needs.

3. Flexibility: EHR usability is all about integrating the EHR into a physician’s practice day in and day out. EHR usability can be complicated so the way a physician uses the technology will evolve as they become more comfortable with improvements in workflow and overall operational efficiencies.

4. Efficiency: An EHR in designed to save time and improve physician and patient workflows. Several EHR platforms do a good job of allowing a physician and staff to easily work on the same computer. This functionality keeps an active patient record online, allowing for the physician and staff to work concurrently on parallel paths.

Limitless Review

This week we look at the fantasy drama Limitless. It stars Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) as Eddie Morra, a seemingly lazy author forever trying to complete his book while meandering through life. He happens to come across Vernon (Johnny Whitworth), the brother of his ex Melissa played by the lovely Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), who introduces him to a whole new drug, which he later calls NZT, that has not been given a license by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). On trying this drug, everything becomes much clearer to Eddie’s mind, his mind is much more alert, and knows how to process information, and to process it at incredible speeds, and he finishes his book that night much to his publisher’s amazement the next day. His mind is so sharp that he picks up learning another language, and helps a student with their thesis with scraps he came across but with the aid of this drug are crystal clear in his mind.

Vernon lets him know that NZT does not make an individual smarter; they have to be smart already, it just heightens it. Unfortunately as with all drugs the high doesn’t last forever, and Eddie sees that he needs more of the drug from Vernon, however there is a serious problem as when Eddie gets to Vernon’s apartment, he finds him dead, and the place ransacked by someone looking for Vernon’s stash of NZT. Eddie eventually finds Vernon’s stash of NZT, but he finds that he is now being followed by not one but two sinister characters bent on getting their hands on this revolutionary new drug.

With his ability to analyse situations improved by the drug, Eddie tries his hand at dabbling with the stock market. He makes such a phenomenal profit to the stock of a company that he gets the attention of a major investor Carl Van Loon played by the always impressive Robert De Niro (The God Father), trying to seal a deal with a major corporation. As Eddie tries to impress Carl to gain a contract on behalf of the company he is currently working for, he begins to find out some of the side effects of NZT, and alarmingly finds out that the end result of the drug is a far cry from the start, and is running out of time before the sinister characters either get hold of him and or his supply of NZT, and keeping up appearances to land Carl as an investor. Eddie also has to deal with another ex, Lindy played by the lovely Abbie Cornish (Stop-Loss) who remarkably looks like Charlize Theron; and is falling in love with the new improved Eddie.

Limitless is a great movie with plenty of twists and turns many will enjoy.
